Hey,
Yesterday I lost 500 followers on one of my pages.
Some people would panic.
I celebrated.
Here's why.
Followers Are Not Created Equal:
Type 1: Dead weight - never engage never buy never share
Type 2: Your real audience - like comment share click your links actually care
The Problem:
When you have too many Type 1 followers your engagement rate tanks.
Instagram sees 100,000 followers but only 2,000 engagement (2% rate).
Instagram thinks: "If this content was good more followers would engage."
So it stops showing your posts.
The Solution:
Let the dead weight unfollow.
Post polarizing content.
Take strong positions.
Filter out people who don't care.
What Happens:
Yes you lose followers.
But your engagement rate goes UP.
Instagram sees 85,000 followers with 8,000 engagement (9.4% rate).
Instagram thinks: "This content is high quality. Let's show it to more people."
Your reach explodes.
Real Example:
Page stuck at 150k followers with 15,000 average reach.
Started posting polarizing content.
Lost 12,000 followers over 2 months.
New average reach: 45,000 per post.
With FEWER followers I got 3X more reach.
The Bottom Line:
Follower count is a vanity metric.
Engagement rate is what matters.
1,000 engaged followers > 10,000 dead followers.
Let the dead weight go.
Build an audience that actually cares.
